UK’s OpenTrade Secures $7 Million to Democratize Stablecoin Yields in Inflation-Stricken Regions

London-based fintech infrastructure provider OpenTrade has successfully raised $7 million in a strategic funding round led by Notion Capital and Mercury Fund, alongside participation from AlbionVC, a16z Crypto, and CMCC Global. According to the company, this brings its total capital raised to approximately $11 million over the past six months—a testament to growing institutional confidence in its mission.

OpenTrade offers a “yield-as-a-service” platform that allows fintechs, crypto exchanges, and neobanks to integrate real‑world asset (RWA)–backed interest-bearing products for USD and EUR stablecoins—specifically, USDC and EURC. These products provide an attractive 3–9% APR, a marked improvement over traditional banking yields.

Since launching its first product in early 2024, OpenTrade has experienced strong traction:

  • $47 million in assets under management.

  • Nearly $200 million in transaction volume over the past year.

  • Sustained 20% month‑over‑month growth for the past six months.

These metrics highlight robust user engagement rather than passive institutional lock-up, driven largely by partners like Littio in Colombia and Criptan in Spain. For example, Colombian users receive yields of up to 6% on USDC, compared to local dollar account APRs of less than 0.4%, while Criptan offers up to 6% on EURC, outperforming European bank rates.

According to founders Dave Sutter (CEO), Jeff Handler (CCO), and Tom Niermann (CTO)—veterans of the Centre consortium behind USDC—OpenTrade’s goal is to make stablecoins more than just payment tools. As Sutter stated, they aim to “unlock access to dollar‑based savings for individuals historically outside the reach of traditional financial systems”.

Investor comments reflect optimism about OpenTrade’s future:

  • “OpenTrade is building core financial infrastructure for the next generation of fintech,” said Mercury Fund’s Samantha Lewis.

  • Notion Capital’s Itxaso del Palacio noted that “with a market cap of over $240 billion, the stablecoin market is now a force to be reckoned with,” and praised OpenTrade’s comprehensive, industry-grade platform.

Why This Matters Now

OpenTrade is riding (and fueling) several converging global trends:

  • Inflation pressure: In places like Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, unstable local currencies and lackluster bank yields are driving the adoption of stablecoins as savings vehicles.

  • Stablecoin growth: With the global stablecoin market now hovering around $240 billion, transaction volumes have surpassed traditional card networks and payment systems.

  • RWA integration: Asset-backed yield models—which combine blockchain speed with off-chain legal protections like bankruptcy-remote structures and regulated custodians—are increasingly appealing to fintechs and regulated entities.

What’s Next

The new funds are earmarked for:

  • Scaling go‑to‑market efforts, especially across Latin America and Europe.

  • Expanding the product suite to include various yield offerings backed by different asset classes.

  • Strengthening engineering and operations, enabling smoother onboarding and faster roll-outs for client apps.

OpenTrade’s $7 million raise (bringing total funding to $11 million) marks a major step in its mission to embed compliant, high-yield stablecoin options into everyday fintech ecosystems—attractive, especially in high-inflation regions where traditional savings fall short. With impressive traction, powerhouse investors, and a strategic roadmap ahead, OpenTrade is well-positioned to redefine how users interact with stablecoins globally.
